California as a sovereign nation?

I had a random thought the other day, to wit:

It’s probably too late to save California…
maybe it’s time to let it go.

So I posted this simple notion on FB. It generated a fairly respectable flurry of responses, among which was this from one of my left-leaning adversaries who, while not renowned for his erudition, does make one hell of a fine pizza:

They have a record of contributing more funds to the feds than they receive. I don’t think your plan is well thought out for your conservative shithole states in the South hahaha

You talking about ME having a plan? When it comes to CA, I don’t… just floating an idea. I lived in Cali from 1990-2000, and several times saw headlines of various sizable groups advocating that the state secede from the union. At first the idea seemed ludicrous, for reasons others have pointed out on this thread.

The main reason I’m beginning to think the idea has merit is because a state which apparently cannot govern itself without careening into bankruptcy, imposing one absurd regulation after another (and home to more enthusiastic socialists, transhumanists and moral relativists than perhaps any other state), shouldn’t necessarily have such unfettered access to, or influence over, the majority of the country (IOW, the “real world”) which does not at all share its values.

So maybe all those frustrated Californians who summarily dismiss places like Indiana as “backward bastions of conservative dysfunction”, and firmly believe that CA would do well to form its own sovereign nation, have it right after all. For myself, I’m inclined to favor the idea, if for no other reason than it would make a grand (and probably very entertaining) experiment in “progressive” social engineering which should disprove once and for all the utter folly and unsustainability of left-coast thinking.

But I’ll try to be open-minded, ok? It’s a complex equation, and one shouldn’t presume to make a prediction as to whether CA could somehow manage to become a viable sovereign nation if given the opportunity. But I do believe America would fare better without CA than CA would fare without America.
