Even though they’ve not finished the clinical trials for it, Pfizer is calling for an emergency use authorization (EUA) of its COVID-19 shot for children ages 6 months to 5 years.
According to The New York Times, Pfizer may make its formal request as early as Tuesday, February 1, 2022. As it stands, the EUA would cover two doses for the children; the three-dose regimen data aren’t expected to be available until mid-March.
Authorities cited “a sharp increase in pediatric cases” of COVID as the reason for the EUA. “Even though young children tend to do well combating the virus, some can get very ill. Federal officials were anxious to begin a vaccination program for the youngest children because the studies showed there were no safety concerns with two doses,” the Times said.
