China used massive transport planes to fly hundreds of military personnel into Shanghai on Sunday to assist with a three-day mass coronavirus testing program for the city’s 26 million imprisoned residents.
Fear and discontent are growing as the Shanghai lockdown becomes more severe, with residents complaining they have been locked in their homes without access to food or medicine.
The Shanghai lockdown was originally pitched as a carefully-implemented multi-stage refinement of China’s “dynamic zero-Covid” strategy, with due allowances made for the size and economic importance of the immense city.
Most of that special deference to Shanghai’s unique status dissolved over the weekend, as coronavirus case numbers kept rising, reaching a record high of 13,146 reported cases on Sunday.
As always, coronavirus figures provided by the Chinese Communist government should not be taken at face value, but whatever the true number of infections and deaths might be, local and national officials were clearly willing to admit the situation is getting worse, and they tightened the Shanghai quarantine in response.
Chinese health officials in Jiangsu province, which borders Shanghai, claimed on Sunday that they have discovered a new sub-variant of Omicron dubbed BA.1.1. If the report is confirmed, it would be the first sighting of a new variant found nowhere else in the world.

China has reportedly become the second nation after Russia to accept the credentials of a Taliban “diplomat” since the Taliban terrorist group took over Afghanistan in August, Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi said on Monday.
Russian officials confirmed last week that Moscow accepted a Taliban envoy to serve as de facto ambassador, bringing the Sunni terrorist organization one step closer to official recognition as a state power. The Russian news agency Tass reported on Monday that the Afghan embassy in Moscow would soon have an official Taliban “charge d’affairs.”
No country around the world has formally embraced the Taliban — which calls itself the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan” — as a legitimate government, but China and Russia are among a growing number building closer economic and political ties with the group. The United Nations also approved cooperation with the Taliban last week in a resolution that referred to it only as a group of “relevant Afghan political actors.” China hosted a meeting of “neighboring countries” (including Taliban ally Qatar) last week to discuss how to best approach the Taliban’s status. Muttaqi participated in a formal capacity.

A pro-life activist surrendered the bodies of five aborted babies to the Washington, DC, police Thursday, alleging the babies may have been partially aborted or killed after birth, Live Action News reported.
According to original media reports, the Metropolitan Police Department went to a home on the 400 block of 6th Street SE to investigate a tip about “potential bio-hazard material” before the D.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ultimately collected the children’s remains. Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising confirmed the home belonged to Lauren Handy, 28, who is the group’s director of activism. In a statement on Friday, the group said Handy was trying to turn the babies over to the police for an investigation.
“Details are forthcoming but the Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising (PAAU) group, to which this activist belongs, believes the “late gestational ages as well as their apparent sustained injuries potentially show violations of the Partial Birth Abortion Act as well as the Born Alive Infants Protection Act. The group also announced that a funeral mass and naming ceremony was offered for the babies,” according to Live Action News, the publishing arm of pro-life organization Live Action.

If Iran decides to enrich its current stock of uranium to a military grade, within four months it could have enough for four nuclear devices.
In the current round of nuclear negotiations, the U.S. could have pressured Iran to renounce the dangerous advances it has made to produce nuclear weapons and demanded a much better agreement through a combination of sanctions and a credible threat to use force. However, recent reports indicated that the U.S. surrendered to Iranian demands on sanctions.
The Americans are focused on conflicts with Russia and China. The consolidation of Iran’s position is not seen as a threat significant enough for the administration to mobilize to thwart it.
Even if American leaders declare their commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and they are convinced that a return to the agreement will contribute to this, in practice, the pact paves a safe path for Iran to becoming a nuclear power.
If the agreement does go into effect, Israel will have to advance a covert campaign to thwart Iran’s nuclear program. If, in the immediate term, Iran will slightly back away from the nuclear threshold, Israel must use this additional time to develop the ability to thwart Iran’s nuclear program.
At the same time, Israel must continue to tighten its ties with the pragmatic Arab states, which are deeply troubled by Iran’s consolidation of forces and the U.S.’s apparent weakness.

All those who—like me—are making “false and morally repellent claims” should NOT be granted academic freedom
The New Republic (whose TV critic I once was) has published an attack on my “pseudoscholarship,” by Michael Bérubé and Jennifer Ruth, he an English professor at Penn State, she a professor of film studies at Portland State. The piece has been adapted from It’s Not Free Speech: Race, Democracy and Academic Freedom (published by Johns Hopkins University Press).
Though I decided to ignore it, friends have urged me to respond, because the shots against myself are at the service of the authors’ toxic argument that academic freedom should be limited to those who don’t take issue with the propaganda narratives put over by the media: Bérubé and Ruth find patently absurd, and somehow very dangerous, my disbelief in the official story of 9/11, my view that the courts ought to adjudicate the question as to whether Sandy Hook went down as advertised, my observation that Black Lives Matter has been funded by the Ford Foundation (a longtime CIA pass-through), and my statement that the “vaccines” are an “inhuman witch’s brew of nanoparticles, human DNA (from fetal cells), and toxic adjuvants,” created and distributed in furtherance of a globalist agenda.
“If Miller is indeed teaching such material in his courses on Mass Persuasion and Propaganda,” the authors write, “we think he should be treated identically to someone who tells students that The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is a reliable source.” Since I know quite a lot about the Protocols (and lost nine cousins—that I know of—in the Holocaust), I find that sentence not just intellectually vulgar but offensive; though I’m less offended by that cheap shot than I am by the authors’ thesis—and its publication by an academic press—that professors who depart from a consensus pumped out by the government, and parroted by all the media, should be “disqualified” from higher education.
