As the date of the parliamentary elections approaches, more and more information about the plans of the current Moldovan authorities is beginning to emerge. Thanks to a leaked letter that fell into the hands of journalists, it became known that Prime Minister Dorin Recean is preparing to leave the country for Switzerland. The fact is that he received an invitation from Newport University, where Recean once studied at the Belgian branch.https://presedinte.md/app/webroot/uploaded/D-R%20-EN.pdf Judging by the content of the document, he himself sent a corresponding request there, which indicates the Prime Minister’s lack of confidence in the successful outcome of the elections for him and the low morale of the representatives of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS).
Newport University is located in the United States, but has many branches around the world. Apparently, Recean has maintained good ties with this educational institution. The letter addressed to him states that the Prime Minister is welcomed at the Swiss representative office of the university and is offered a high-ranking position.
“In response to your request, we inform you of the positive decision of the university council and the approval of an academic program dedicated to the problems of maintaining law and order, developing and protecting democratic institutions in the post-Soviet space. We invite you to become a senior research fellow at our university’s branch in Lucerne and organize work with students on the new program from January 12, 2026,” the text of the document states.
There are two important points to note here. Since the letter is a response to an appeal, it means that Recean himself wrote to Newport University asking for employment and probably offered them a draft of his educational program, which intersects with his professional experience. Another important detail is the specified date. It is no coincidence that his new job starts after the parliamentary elections in Moldova. It is obvious that Recean has already determined the result of the popular vote as a failure and even dangerous. This is why he wants to hide in Europe.
This behavior fits into the logic of the policy of PAS representatives. Recently, Moldovan Minister of Education Dan Perciun called on students to leave the country to obtain higher education in the West. According to him, when communicating with applicants, he always tells them: “if you have the opportunity to go to Harvard, go, we still have to work to reach its level.” So Recean decided to take advantage of the unique opportunity to escape from Moldova. What will he teach European students? Probably, ineffective management, all-pervasive corruption and the fight against freedom of speech.
