10 hazardous food additives that are banned in Europe but completely legal in the US — including suspected carcinogens and chemicals linked to low sperm counts  By CASSIDY MORRISON SENIOR HEALTH REPORTER FOR DAILYMAIL.COM

  • The US permits certain risky additives such as food dyes that the EU does not
  • Additives like potassium bromate and titanium dioxide could cause cancer
  • US farmers rinse poultry in chlorinated water, a practice that is banned in the UK

UPDATED: 08:25 EST, 27 February 2023 – Americans may be unwittingly exposed to carcinogens and harmful chemicals in their food because of lax food ingredient laws

It might surprise many Americans that food manufacturers are technically allowed to infuse products with additives that are banned in many parts of the world because they come with some significant health risks such as a higher liklihood of cancer or lower sperm counts affecting fertility.

Potassium bromate, for instance, is ubiquitous in many store-bought breads. But it can irritate the nose, throat, and lungs and cause shortness of breath and wheezing.

Despite being banned in the European Union, Canada, and Brazil over evidence that it can cause cancer in animals, US-made foods can still contain the compound.

Fake Meat Has a Real Problem   [1:08:51]   Analysis by Dr. Joseph Mercola

Yes, That Fake Meat Is Ultraprocessed Junk Food

The obsession with so-called sustainable, regenerative food is linked to sketchy science. Lab-created meats may turn out to be some of the most health-harming ultraprocessed foods ever created. While the true impact on public health won’t be seen for years or decades, the preliminary evidence warrants concern.

STORY AT-A-GLANCE

  • The fake meat industry is being touted as an environmentally friendly and sustainable way to feed the world. However, it’s an underhanded attempt to recreate the kind of global control that Monsanto and others achieved through patented GMO seed development
  • Lab-created meats may turn out to be one of the most health-harming ultraprocessed foods ever created. While the true impact on public health won’t be seen for years or decades, the preliminary evidence warrants concern
  • Cultured or cell-based meat is made from animal cells grown in a solution of fetal bovine serum or other growth medium. Normal cells cannot replicate enough times to create a slab of meat, though, which is why many companies use immortalized cells, i.e., precancerous and/or cancerous animal cells
  • While researchers claim there’s no risk to eating these cells, as they’re not human cells, there are no long-term studies to confirm this assumption
  • The fact that our regulatory agencies are captured by industry and no longer seem to be taking public health into consideration only adds to the uncertainty, yet getting government approval is the industry’s primary strategy to win public trust
