Seriously wounded soldier who contracted fungal infection dies Israel National News

Experimental drug brought from Ireland fails to stabilize condition of Hanan Drori, who contracted a serious infection after being seriously wounded in an RPG attack in Gaza 2 months ago.

Feb 7, 2024, 9:14 AM (GMT+2) – The IDF soldier who contracted a fungal infection after being seriously wounded in battle in the Gaza Strip has died, Sheba Medical Center reported this morning (Wednesday).

The soldier was identified as Hanan Drori, a reserve soldier from the community of Psagot in the Binyamin region. He was 26-years-old.

Drori left behind his parents and three siblings, and was to become engaged soon.

The family of the soldier appealed for help in obtaining the experimental drug Fosmanogepix from Ireland and succeeded in obtaining it, but the treatment did not help and the soldier was pronounced dead.

The soldier had been seriously wounded in an RPG attack during combat operations in Gaza two months ago and subsequently suffered an acute fungal infection.

The Israeli Society for Infectious Diseases has warned that soldiers returning from Gaza have been carrying an alarming amount of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. [Emphasis added]

Feb 7, 2024, 3:31 PM (GMT+2) – Soldiers of the Yahalom Unit and another elite unit carried out a targeted raid under the command of the 98th Brigade on an additional strategic underground tunnel over one kilometer in length in Khan Yunis.

The tunnel was used to hide high-ranking members of the Hamas terrorist organization and to hold hostages. The forces fought in the tunnel against terrorists, breached metal doors, and neutralized explosives.

Prime Minister Netanyahu discussed the humanitarian aid to Gaza and said that up to 60% of the humanitarian aid that enters Gaza is taken by Hamas.

Feb 7, 2024, 8:51 PM (GMT+2) – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a press conference on Wednesday, during which he criticized the executive order signed by US President Joe Biden to impose sanctions on four residents of Judea and Samaria accused of violence against Palestinian Arabs.

“This order is a very severe and inappropriate thing which harms an entire population of law-abiding citizens, among whom are soldiers who fell in the fight to eliminate Hamas. If they were using it equally- they would have imposed sanctions on Palestinians as well,” the Prime Minister said when asked on the matter.

The Prime Minister opened his statement by proclaiming: “We are on the road to complete victory. It is in reach – it is a few months away, not years.”

Regarding the discussions on the day after the war, in light of his meeting with US Secretary of State Blinken, he said “the day after, is the day after Hamas. After we destroy Hamas we will ensure that Gaza will be totally demilitarized. There is only one force that can ensure demilitarization: the State of Israel. That means that Israel will operate in Gaza, in every location and at every time needed to ensure that terrorism won’t lift its head again. The civil management of Gaza can not be by those who teach and fund terrorism, that means that we have to replace UNRWA. I ordered to begin this process and I also updated Blinken.”

In exchange for the release of the sick women and the elderly – Hamas demands the release of the minors, women and those aged 50 and over who are sick. 1. The halt of military activity in preparation for the complete cessation and the withdrawal of IDF forces to the surrounding areas.

2. Ceasefire of 135 days in three stages of 45 days each during which all the Israeli hostages and the bodies of the Israelis held in Gaza will be released in exchange for the Palestinian prisoners and bodies held in Israel.

3. Preventing Jews from entering the Temple Mount and returning the situation on the Mount to what it was before 2002 (Jews were not allowed to tour).

And now for the details according to the three stages:

The first stage (45 days) –

1. A complete (and mutual) halt of military activity in the Strip, including air activity (no monitoring, no drones).

2. Withdrawal of IDF forces from the inhabited areas in the Gaza Strip to the border.

3. The release of all Israeli hostages under the age of 19 (who are not soldiers), as well as the elderly and the sick whose names were previously agreed upon (referring to the agreement of the month of November) in exchange for the release of all the Palestinian prisoners imprisoned in Israel who are younger than 19 or older than 50, as well as the sick, in addition to 1,500 Palestinian prisoners named by Hamas, of which 500 are serving life sentences for mass murder.

4. Completing the necessary steps to ensure that the prisoners who were released for the offenses for which they were imprisoned are not re-arrested (even if they re-offend?).

5. Improving the conditions of the remaining Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons and removing the restrictions imposed on them since October 7.

6. Preventing Jews from entering Al-Aqsa (the entire Temple Mount square) and restoring the situation to what it was before 2002.

7. The introduction of a minimum of 500 aid trucks per day into the Strip, including fuel trucks.

8. The return of all the displaced people to their homes all over the Strip without movement restrictions.

9. The opening of all Gaza crossings for the movement of people and goods without restrictions, including the departure of men, women and children for treatment outside the Gaza Strip without any restrictions.

10. Supply of heavy engineering equipment for clearing rubble, equipment for civil defense and equipment for the Ministry of Health.

11. The rehabilitation of the hospitals and bakeries in the entire strip.

12. Brining in of all the equipment needed to set up residential camps, including: 60 thousand temporary residential buildings (trailers and containers) at a rate of 15 thousand per week.
The introduction of 200,000 tents at a rate of 50,000 per week.

13. The beginning of infrastructure restoration all over the Strip, including water, electricity and communication infrastructures.

14. Approval of a comprehensive plan for the rehabilitation of all the residential buildings, commercial buildings and public buildings that were destroyed as a result of the fighting within a practical schedule of three years.

15. Renewal of all the humanitarian aid provided to the residents of the Gaza Strip and especially the functioning of UNRWA – as it was before October 7.

16. Supplying the diesel needed to operate the power plant in Gaza and needed for all sectors in the Gaza Strip.

17. Israel must be forced to meet the needs of the Gaza Strip in the area of electricity and water.

18. The beginning of the indirect talks to reach a complete calm agreement.

The exchange of prisoners will be closely related to the degree of implementation of the aid.

Egypt, Turkey, Qatar, Russia and the United Nations will guarantee the implementation of this agreement.

These are Hamas’ demands for the first stage.

— At this stage, the conditions of the first stage will continue and the IDF forces will completely withdraw from all areas of the Gaza Strip.

— At this stage, the actual reconstruction of buildings and infrastructure in the Strip will begin, including a mechanism that will ensure the end of the siege on the Strip.

These are Hamas’ demands for the third stage.

— The terms of the first and second phases will continue and there will be an exchange of bodies between Israel and Hamas.

There is now a tent camp near Kerem Shalom for the protestors to be pre-positioned, hundreds arrived overnight and set up road blocks. (( This puts the government in a challenging but opportunistic position – they could use the protestors to slow aid with the international pressures and war advantages that brings, or they could get forceful with the protestors unlike official reactions to the Kaplan Bring-Them-Home protests in Tel Aviv – which would cause a major unity problem. ))

▪️HOSTAGE DEAL – HAMAS RESPONDS.. basically says no, but the analysis of the response is amazing:

.. Prime Minister of Qatar: We received Hamas’ response to the proposal, and it looks promising. We hope to reach more results soon, and wish to reach an agreement as soon as possible.

.. Arab Desk: their demand is basically Israeli surrender to the dictates of a terrorist organization. There is no way Israel would approve such a thing.

.. Senior Israeli official: Hamas’ answer means a rejection of the offer. There is no intention to stop the war.

.. Biden: Hamas’ answer is exaggerated. (( The president knows what the terrorists mean more than the terrorists do? ))

▪️DEAD HOSTAGES.. yesterday we reported a leaked Israeli intelligence analysis that estimates 32 of 136 hostages dead. Egyptian sources: it is estimated that up to 50 of the abductees held by Hamas may not be alive.

▪️NORMALIZATION – SAUDI’s.. “We will not sign normalization with Israel until the end of the war and the establishment of a Palestinian state.”

▪️FAR FETCHED IDF EXERCISES.. yesterday the IDF in Judea-Samaria ran practice exercises of various scenarios that may happen, including “extreme, some would say far-fetched”. One of these scenarios was a settlers-kidnap-Palestinian-children scenario. This was judged outrageous and unacceptable, and several officers and politicians have apologized for it. But here is an IDF response:

“the exercise that caused a stir yesterday is one of many – some extreme, some would say far-fetched. The main occupation of the IDF (in Judea-Samaria) is with Palestinian terrorism – as you can see in the list (not included here), nationalist crime is almost last in the list of scenarios. One of the most important lessons to be learned from Oct. 7 – to prepare for any scenario, even the most unexpected.”

▪️US SEC STATE REQUESTS DIRECT SECURITY BRIEFING FROM IDF CHIEF.. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken unusually requested a private security review directly from the Chief of Staff. Prime Minister Netanyahu refused.

Hostage families and activists for their release blocked Begin Road in front of the Kirya base in Tel Aviv (across from Arielli) last night in protest against the “poison campaign” that they say is being waged against the families and demanding a deal that would lead to the release of their relatives.

▪️DEFENSE MINISTER ON LEBANON.. “We are pushing the enemy. The military operation gives Hezbollah an understanding that it is better for it to choose the political path, and at the same time proves our military capabilities.”

▪️SYRIA – OVERNIGHT ATTACKS ON HOMS.. airstrikes, though local channels report civilian deaths from failed air defense missiles rather than the attack. Sources associated with the regime list 4 sites that were attacked: Elkzir area (Kosair) southwest of Homs- civilian casualties from air defenses, Havat Aloer and the eastern area of Tadmor Square, Hamra Street in the city of Homs, a building collapsed, and in the area of the municipal stadium – civilian casualties from air defenses, the Alauras area in Homs. While likely Israel, the IDF does NOT confirm attacks in Syria.

▪️US HOUSE REJECTS ISRAEL AID DUE TO INTERNAL POLITICS.. The U.S. House of Representatives rejected a Republican-led bill on Tuesday that would provide $17.6 billion to Israel, as Democrats said they wanted a vote instead on a broader measure that would also provide assistance to Ukraine, international humanitarian funding and new money for border security. The vote was 250 to 180, falling short because it was introduced under an expedited procedure requiring a two-thirds majority for passage. The against was mostly Democrats.

▪️US PRESSURE… A senior American administration official told NBC: The Biden administration is exploring various options, including recognition of a Palestinian state, which would give legal and symbolic status to the Palestinians and add international pressure on Israel to take part in meaningful negotiations that would lead to sustainable peace. (( First, as always where is the pressure on Hamas or the Palestinian Authority for “meaningful negotiations”? Second, this is a classic “we’re not doing that, but some anonymous official is saying we might – to create pressure” tactic. Third, we will not suicide because defending ourselves doesn’t meet your expectations. ))

▪️IRAN FUNDING HAMAS.. IDF captures documentation showing direct funding from Iran, in years 2014, 2015, 2019, and 2020, Hamas leader Sinwar received $15 million, $48 million, $42 million, and $12 million, respectively.

▪️HOUTHI SHIPPING ATTACKS.. US Central Command: “Yesterday the Houthis launched 6 missiles at two merchant ships – one Greek and one British. 3 missiles were launched at the Greek ship, one exploded near the ship and caused minor damage. One was intercepted by the destroyer USS Laboon and one fell in the water. 3 missiles that were launched at the British ship – they all missed.

FEBRUARY 6TH, 2024 – “It’s one hundred and twenty-three days since the war began. Throughout, we have not forgotten the hostages for a moment. We are making every effort to bring them home and to extract all information about them and their condition. The IDF is accompanying the families of the hostages during these complex and difficult days, and our representatives provide the families with all the verified information about their loved ones. With this, we have notified thirty-one families that their loved ones who are hostages are no longer alive and we have confirmed their deaths. To the rest of the families, we have provided all the verified information available to us about their fate and condition. We continue to operate in order to create the conditions to bring all the hostages home. This is a moral, national, and international obligation. It is our compass and it is how we will continue to act.

IDF soldiers continue to operate in Khan Yunis in the south of the Strip and are intensifying achievements in the north of the Strip. In Khan Yunis, special units are operating in the subterranean area, together with the Israel Security Agency, using advanced technology and precise intelligence to locate Hamas’ strategic compounds underground. Despite the dozens of kilometers of tunnels, there are not many compounds left and we have reached most of them. We have located compounds where Hamas leaders hid and from where they managed the fighting, some of which held hostages and others contained intelligence material. This evening, we are publishing some of the intelligence information found there by our forces – indicating a direct ‘connection’ from Iran to Hamas and more so – to Yahya Sinwar. We found official Hamas documents from 2020 detailing the funds transferred by Iran between the years 2014 and 2020 to Hamas and to Sinwar. More than one hundred and fifty million dollars were transferred from Iran to Hamas. This is another example of how Iran exports terror across the Middle East. The terror that Iran exports and produces is a global problem. The intelligence information we find, we pass on to our partners around the world for verification. In the same subterranean space, we also found a safe with banknotes and bags containing more than twenty million shekels in cash, as you can see in the blue and black bags addressed to a clear location. These amounts join tens of millions of shekels we located during the war in Hamas tunnels in cases filled with millions of dollars. This is a recurring phenomenon – large sums of cash, kept in organized compounds underground for the personal use of senior Hamas officials. Hamas leaders invested the money in their personal survival and that of their families underground. Thanks to the intelligence we located underground, investigated and studied in the Intelligence Directorate (J2) and the ISA, we are launching further, new operations and destroying new Hamas terror infrastructure. This is how we are currently acting in a military operation against terror sites in the north of the Strip. IDF soldiers are there at this moment, in the midst of a wide operation in the Shati area, in Gaza City, on which we will update later. The forces are reaching additional sensitive Hamas infrastructure underground, eliminating terrorists remaining in the area and thwarting Hamas’ attempts to rebuild its capabilities. Also in these places, we are finding important intelligence this evening, which we will reveal later.

I want to address the exercise that took place in Judea and Samaria – the Central Command exercised the Judea and Samaria Division in a large number of scenarios. The division trains for one purpose only – to better protect the residents. Since the beginning of the war, the Central Command, under the personal leadership of the Commanding Officer of the Central Command, MG Yehuda Fox, has been working non-stop to protect the security of the residents, thwarting terror together with the ISA in close cooperation with the settlements. From the soldiers to the last of the commanders – we are there to protect the residents. In the exercise referenced, one scenario out of dozens did not need to be conducted. The IDF will investigate, learn, and above all, continue to perform its mission in the most professional and practical manner.”

The popular Argentinian president announced when he touched down that Argentina will move its embassy to Jerusalem, the capital of Israel.

Milei follows President Donald Trump in 2019, and President Orban from Hungary in 2023 in moving their embassies from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Palestinian police have arrested a suspect in the killing of a 25-year-old man after his body was found decapitated in the occupied West Bank.

LGBTQ groups in Israel, where Ahmad Abu Marhia was seeking asylum, say he had received threats because he was gay.

Video of the murder scene in Hebron has spread widely on social media raising speculation about the motive, but police say nothing is confirmed.

It is unclear for now how Mr Abu Marhia ended up in the city.

LGBTQ groups say he had spent two years in Israel waiting on an asylum claim to flee abroad after receiving death threats from within his community.

Israeli media quote friends of the victim as saying he was kidnapped to the West Bank.

His family, however, said he regularly visited Hebron to see them and to work. They described the claims about the motive as rumour.

During October 7th, Hamas booby-trapped victims’ bodies in an attempt to kill anyone attending to them.

Shari Mendes, an IDF reservist who helped identify female victims of the October 7th massacre, told Sky News in an interview that Hamas shot women multiple times in the faces until they were unrecognizable and mutilated their genitals.

Mendes describes the piles of bodies she confronted at the Shura camp, the hundreds piled up on top of each other.

Many of the bodies were desecrated to the point where it was difficult to identify them or prepare them properly for burial.

“The halls were lined to the ceiling with body bags, the smell was unimaginable. I can’t tell you the shock and despair that struck all of us.”

As a testament to the sexual assault that was perpetrated on the women who were killed, Shari Mendes said she saw many of the women with underwear pulled down to their knees with blood on the groin and on the fabric.

“Women were shot many times in the face… Their mouths were in grimaces, their eyes were open, their fists were clenched.”

Hamas had booby-trapped many of the bodies in an attempt to kill anyone attending to them, and workers had to be evacuated.

In spite of forensic evidence and eyewitness testimony that there was sexual assault and mutilation, many still deny that such crimes took place on October 7th, alleging that Hamas wouldn’t have engaged in sexual violence because it is against Islamic law.

According to accounts from freed hostages, both women and men are being sexually abused in captivity.

Released hostage Chen Goldstein Almog said, “There are girls in captivity who haven’t had their periods in a long time, and maybe we should pray for that, that their bodies will protect them and they won’t get pregnant from rape.”

She continued, “We have to do everything to get them back.”

Aviva Siegal, whose husband Keith is still in captivity said, “The terrorists bring inappropriate clothes, clothes for dolls and turn the girls into their dolls.”

“Dolls on a string with which you can do whatever you want, whenever you want,” she added.

Siegal said sexual abuse was also perpetrated on male hostages, “The boys also go through abuse — what the girls go through.”

“Maybe they don’t get pregnant [but] they are also puppets on a string,” she said.

February 5, 2024 – Police have served a summons for a hearing before the imposition of an administrative restriction order to Yinon Levi, a husband, father, and farmer near the town of Michmas in the Binyamin region. The order comes from General Yehuda Fox, who is appointed over the IDF’s Central Command.

As part of the restrictions imposed on him, Yinon is forbidden to enter Judea and Samaria, including his house and farm, for four months, of which two have already passed. He is also forbidden to contact several dozen of his friends, has been dismissed from reserve service in the IDF, and his personal firearm confiscated at the direction of the Shin Bet, and against the advice of military officials in the area. The confiscation of his firearm has left the farm effectively defenseless.

A military source claimed that the orders are unconnected to the sanctions imposed by President Biden against four “settlers,” and added that the order had indeed been signed months ago, but that the responsibility for serving it lay with the police.

Just the other day, Bank Leumi notified Yinon, one of four Israelis who were targeted last week by US sanctions, that his accounts in Israel have been frozen.

The Israel Postal Bank has sequestered and closed the account of David Chai Chasdai, one of four Israelis who were targeted by US sanctions for claims of violence against Arabs in Judea and Samaria. The account is shared with Chasdai’s wife. “The fact that a government bank decides to sequester the accounts of settlers because of pressure from far-left organizations and the hostile American government is unfathomable, but the fact that it is happening under a right-wing government a moment after the worst massacre in history is a national embarrassment,” he stated.

Go ahead and make us believe this is unconnected to Biden’s recently signed executive order against Israeli “extremist settlers. We’ve seen this scenario before and it’s very obvious as to WHY this is happening now. This is clearly a theatrical performance to appease Biden. The fact that it’s taking place while a right-wing government is at war with terrorists is appalling.

02-04-2024 11:10 – The Biden administration has been pressing Israel to provide answers regarding a series of incidents in which, it claims, IDF units operating in Judea and Samaria violated the so-called “Leahy Law”, a set of legal amendments that restrict the funding of military aid to units over human rights concerns, Israel Hayom has exclusively learned.

The Leahy Law states that Pentagon-appropriated funds “may not be used for any training, equipment, or other assistance for a foreign security force unit if the Secretary of Defense has credible information that such unit has committed a gross violation of human rights.”

The warning implies that should Israel fail to provide satisfactory answers, IDF forces serving in the West Bank will not get US-funded munitions.

According to information obtained by Israel Hayom, the warning was conveyed to Israel over a month ago and is known to the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem.

In order to deal with the claims, the International Law Department in the Military Advocate General’s office and other legal entities have been in contact with the US and are supposed to answer their questions regarding the incidents under discussion, with only two months left to send the response.

The Foreign Ministry confirms that “over the years, the ministry has cooperated with requests from the American administration in the context of the Leahy Law.” However, an Israeli official said that there was no knowledge of a concrete warning being issued.

A spokesperson from the US Embassy in Israel said the “Leahy vetting” was an effective foreign policy tool, which promotes respect for human rights by America’s security partners, and the accountability of security force units credibly implicated in gross violations of human rights. It further noted that the law’s requirements apply to all countries receiving relevant US assistance, including Israel, and the State Department provides assistance consistent with the law’s requirements.

Every Israeli security force unit proposed to receive relevant US assistance is subject to Leahy vetting as a matter of course. As provided for under the law, the State Department also has a process for assessing reports of potentially serious human rights violations by Israeli security forces, the spokesperson said.

It should be noted that this is not the first time that the Leahy Law requirements have been mentioned in the context of Israel. Senator Patrick Leahy himself tried, in the final stages of the Obama administration, to use the law to stop security assistance to certain IDF units over allegations of human rights violations.

Two weeks ago, the British Guardian published that the State Department was conducting an in-depth, extensive examination according to the Leahy Law requirements regarding IDF activities in the West Bank. Since the beginning of the Gaza war, the IDF has also operated intensely in these areas, killing over 500 terrorists and arresting thousands of suspects in terror activities.

Four Gaza City residents told The Associated Press that in recent days, uniformed and plainclothes police officers deployed near police headquarters and other government offices, including near Al Shifa Hospital, the territory’s largest. The residents said they saw the return of civil servants and subsequent Israeli airstrikes near the makeshift offices in the western and northwestern parts of Gaza City.

The return of police marks an attempt to reinstate order in the devastated city after Israel withdrew a significant number of troops from northern Gaza last month, a Hamas official told AP, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

The official said the group’s leaders had given directions to reestablish order in parts of the north where Israeli forces had withdrawn, including by helping prevent the looting of shops and houses abandoned by residents who heeded repeated Israeli evacuation orders and headed to southern Gaza.

Saeed Abdel-Bar, a resident of Gaza City, said a cousin received funds from a makeshift Hamas office that was set up to distribute $200 payouts to government employees, including police officers and municipal workers.

The partial salary payments for some government employees signal that Israel has not delivered a knockout blow to Hamas, even as Gallant has previously claimed that the IDF has killed more than 10,000 Hamas fighters.

Ahmed Abu Hadrous, a Gaza City resident, said Israeli warplanes struck the area where the makeshift office is located multiple times earlier this week, including Saturday.

The policy includes daily operational activity in Judea and Samaria by various Israeli security forces, based on ISA intelligence.

The IDF notes that several senior members of Hamas, inciters, and supporters of terror were arrested at the beginning of the war, which is one of the reasons that Judea and Samaria have not yet experienced open hostilities. Additionally, many terrorists have been assassinated or arrested while planning attacks, with the decisive majority of the operations being carried out by reservist battalions operating in a professional, aggressive, and precise manner.

Hila was taken hostage by Hamas with her mother Raaya and her friend Emily Hand.

The testimony was screened at Saturday evening’s rally calling for the release of the remaining hostages.

“The lives of the hostages are in danger every moment,” she said in her testimony. “There is no food, no water, and no daylight. In the end, there will be no one left to save from there.”
